Valheim: Viking survival, co-op

Rent a Valheim server

Hosting Valheim on a friend's PC means the world is offline the moment that friend is. A rented server is exactly the fix.

What you can configure yourself

14 fields for Valheim in the control panel: server name, password, world name, visibility in the server browser, crossplay and backup settings. Deliberately lean: Valheim offers no more server-side, and a panel inventing fields the game never reads would be a lie.

Why a dedicated server instead of peer-to-peer

Valheim can host from inside the game, but then the world runs on one player's machine. Whoever quits takes the world with them; whoever has a poor connection shares the lag with everyone. A dedicated server flips that: the world keeps running, everyone connects equally, and progress no longer depends on anyone's schedule.

There's a second point you only notice when it's missing: the server backs itself up. Losing a world folder after a crash hurts particularly in Valheim, because progress lives in the world, not in the character.

Mods and existing worlds

Valheim mods usually run through BepInEx and must match between server and client. A mod that only exists on the server produces errors on connect rather than new content. An existing single-player world uploads via the file manager; characters stay local on your machine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload my existing Valheim world?

Yes. Upload the `.db` and `.fwl` files from your local world folder via SFTP while the server is stopped. Characters stay on your machine.

Does crossplay work?

Crossplay can be enabled in the panel. Whether a given mod still works then depends on the mod, not the server.

How do my friends connect?

In the game: “Join Game” → “Join IP” and enter address with port from the control panel. Joining by address is the reliable route; searching the server browser requires visibility to be switched on in the control panel.

How many players fit on a Valheim server?

Valheim itself caps a dedicated server at 10 players; more only with mods. That's why there's no field for it in the control panel: it would be a setting the game doesn't read.

What happens when Valheim updates?

The server checks for a new version via SteamCMD on every start and downloads it. After an update, a restart in the control panel is enough. BepInEx mods you need to check yourself; they break on updates more often.

How are my worlds backed up?

Twice: Valheim makes its own backups, count and interval are set in the control panel. On top come up to 7 server backups in the “Backups” tab, by hand or via a schedule you create in the “Schedules” tab.

Do I have to cancel when I want to stop?

No. Billing is monthly in advance: if you don't pay the next invoice, the contract ends with the paid period. You can cancel at any time via “Cancel contract” in the client area, effective at the end of the paid period. After that the server is suspended and deleted three days later, backups included. Download your world from the “Backups” tab first.
