Why a dedicated server for a free game

Because public servers set the rules. If you have a fixed group, want your own role distributions, or simply don't want someone else's moderation, you need your own, and for a free-to-play title the server is the only running cost at all.

There's more: SCP:SL rounds depend on a full lobby. A server that only runs when one particular person is online never fills up.

Plugins and administration

The common plugin frameworks of the SCP:SL scene run on a dedicated server; upload the files via the file manager. Remote-admin accounts and the whitelist are managed in the panel. That's the part you need most urgently on a public horror server and which is most tedious in pure file setups.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to buy the game?

No, SCP: Secret Laboratory is free. You only pay for the server.

Can I install plugins?

Yes, via file manager or SFTP. The scene's common plugin frameworks work on a dedicated server.

How do I make myself an admin?

Through the remote-admin management in the panel, no config file editing.

How do players find my server?

Via direct connect in the server browser, using address and port from the control panel. An SCP:SL server only appears in the public server list once Northwood Studios has verified it. You apply for verification with Northwood yourself.

How many players fit on it?

You set the cap in the control panel (field “Max players”). Full rounds with many plugins need more memory than a small group without.

What happens when SCP:SL updates?

The server checks for a new version via SteamCMD on every start and downloads it. After an update, a restart is enough. Check your plugins yourself: plugin frameworks often need a new version after big updates.

Do I have to cancel when I want to stop?

No. Billing is monthly in advance: if you don't pay the next invoice, the contract ends with the paid period. You can cancel at any time via “Cancel contract” in the client area, effective at the end of the paid period. After that the server is suspended and deleted three days later, backups included. Download your world from the “Backups” tab first.
