Romestead: Co-op survival and city building after the fall of Rome · Early Access

Rent a Romestead server

Romestead has been in Early Access since May 2026, and its official Linux server has two places where self-hosting gets stuck. Both are solved here before you order.

What you can configure yourself

Romestead doesn't have its own settings editor like Barotrauma yet. Under “Settings” in the panel you'll find the server's start values: world name, world size, password, player count and automatic updates. They apply on the next start. Everything else in `config.json` is reachable via the file manager or SFTP.

The two traps you won't have to hunt down

First: Steam ships `config.json` in a state where the server stops at a text menu on first start (“Load existing world / Create new world”) and never becomes ready. Here the server sets that switch itself before every start, including after an update that resets the file.

Second: after generating a new world, the Romestead server stops responding to `stop` in a terminal. Kill it then, and you lose everything since the last autosave. Here the server reads the console the way the game provides for redirected input. Measured on 24.10.2026: five out of five clean stops, including right after a freshly generated world, and the restart loaded the world again.

Which tier for which world

Romestead needs far more memory while generating a world than afterwards. Measured here: standard world peaked at 3.83 GiB, large world at 7.38 GiB. The smallest tier therefore carries a standard or small world; for a large world, take L. At idle afterwards the server sat at 2.0 to 2.1 GiB.

How much it needs with eight players we haven't measured. If you play as eight from day one, M or L is the safe side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Romestead available on Xbox or PlayStation?

No, as of 24.10.2026 it's PC-only via Steam. The server is a server for PC players.

How many players fit on a Romestead server?

Up to eight. That's the game's limit, and that's how the server is configured here.

Do I lose my world when I stop the server?

No, as long as you stop it from the panel. The server saves and exits, in 10 to 23 seconds here. Only a hard kill costs the progress since the last autosave, which came every six minutes here.

How do my friends connect?

In the game via IP and port from the panel, plus the password if you set one. To be honest: we haven't joined with a real game client yet. What's measured is start, stop, idle load and that the port answers from outside. If it doesn't work, open a ticket.

What happens when Romestead updates?

With “Auto Update” on in the panel (default), the server checks for a new version via SteamCMD before every start, about 6 seconds here. A restart is enough. The world survived our update test. Romestead is Early Access and patches often: take a backup before a big one.

How do I back up my world?

In the panel under “Backups”: back up now, restore, lock. Regular backups go under “Schedules”.

Do I have to cancel when I want to stop?

No. Billing is monthly in advance: if you don't pay the next invoice, the contract ends with the paid period. You can cancel at any time via “Cancel contract” in the client area, effective at the end of the paid period. After that the server is suspended and deleted three days later, backups included. Download your world from the “Backups” tab first.
