Project Zomboid: Co-op survival, moddable

Rent a Project Zomboid server

Zomboid lives on the rules you set beforehand: zombie speed, loot rarity, exhaustion. Here they sit in the panel, not in two separate files.

Project Zomboid server: tiers and prices

What you can configure yourself

144 fields are in the control panel: the server INI in full, plus a separate page for the sandbox rules. That covers both operations (player count, password, PvP, safehouses) and the actual feel of the game, without ever touching a file.

How much RAM does a Zomboid server need?

Memory use grows with the explored map, not with player count. Project Zomboid streams map cells in as players enter them and keeps them accessible afterwards so their state persists. Four players heading in four different directions load the server far more than eight who stay together.

For a fixed group the small tier is enough. If you play for weeks and uncover half the map, or use large map mods from the Workshop, the medium tier is the safe choice.

Steam Workshop mods

Workshop mods go in as an ID list in the settings and the server downloads them on start. Order matters: mod IDs and Workshop IDs are two different lists, and an entry in the wrong one makes the server silently ignore the mod. Both fields sit next to each other in the panel for exactly that reason.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change zombie speed?

Yes, via the sandbox rules in the panel, along with loot rarity, exhaustion, infection spread and time progression.

Is the save backed up?

Yes, automatically every night, plus by hand in the “Backups” tab; the last 7 are kept. Always take one by hand before big mod changes: mods that remove items can render saves unusable.

Can I migrate an existing server?

Yes. World folders and player data upload via SFTP while the server is stopped.

How do my friends connect?

In the game under “Join”, add the server to favourites: address and port from the control panel, plus the server password if set. On first join, every player creates their account on the server with a username and password.

What happens when Project Zomboid updates?

The server fetches the current version via SteamCMD on every start, so after a game update a restart in the control panel is enough.

How many players fit on it?

You set the cap in the control panel (field “Max players”). How many play smoothly depends more on the explored map and mods than on the number.

Do I have to cancel when I want to stop?

No. Billing is monthly in advance: if you don't pay the next invoice, the contract ends with the paid period. You can cancel at any time via “Cancel contract” in the client area, effective at the end of the paid period. After that the server is suspended and deleted three days later, backups included. Download your world from the “Backups” tab first.
