What you can configure yourself

121 of the 124 attributes from `serversettings.xml` are in the control panel: game mode, traitor probability, campaign rules, repair and damage behaviour, voting, moderation. The remaining three are managed by the infrastructure (ports and bindings); exposing them would let you configure your own server unreachable.

Why settings matter so much in Barotrauma

Barotrauma is a game you configure. Whether a round becomes a tense co-op evening or traitor-fuelled chaos is decided before anyone joins, in the server options. That's why it was worth mapping the file almost completely rather than just the ten obvious fields.

The everyday difference: no downloading a file, editing it, uploading it, restarting, and discovering an XML tag was misspelled. Change field, save, done.

Campaigns, mods and custom submarines

Campaign saves live on the server and continue even when the captain is offline. Workshop content (custom submarines, item mods, maps) uploads via the file manager; everyone needs the same content or the game refuses to connect.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring a running campaign?

Yes, campaign files upload via SFTP while the server is stopped.

How do I set traitor probability?

In the panel under the Barotrauma settings, as its own field alongside game mode and round rules.

Why are three settings missing from the panel?

They are ports and network bindings, managed by our infrastructure. A wrong value there would make the server unreachable from outside.

How do my friends connect?

In the game: “Join Server” → direct connect with address and port from the control panel. Joining by address is the reliable route.

How many players fit on it?

You set the cap in the control panel (field “Max players”). For one crew on one sub, the small tier is usually enough.

What happens when Barotrauma updates?

The server checks for a new version via SteamCMD on every start and downloads it. After an update, a restart is enough. Workshop content must then match the new version, or the game refuses the connection.

How do I back up my campaign?

In the “Backups” tab you keep up to 7 backups. On top, the server makes one automatically every night; the last 7 are kept, and one you mark with “Lock” is never deleted.

Do I have to cancel when I want to stop?

No. Billing is monthly in advance: if you don't pay the next invoice, the contract ends with the paid period. You can cancel at any time via “Cancel contract” in the client area, effective at the end of the paid period. After that the server is suspended and deleted three days later, backups included. Download your world from the “Backups” tab first.
